Today I had a bright idea (I don’t have those often) but my professor was not around for me to tell him. Is it the universe’s way of making me bask in the glory of my thoughts over the weekend before I realize how impractical they are on Monday? Or am I at the cusp of a breakthrough? Will I save the world? Watch this space :)Qq

Called an Ethiopian restaurant to have firfir for take away. Told them I would be there in 5 minutes. 5 minutes later in the restaurant the lady tells me “Wuy metah ende. Ahun gena new yazezkut”. Me (grumpy and hungry but forcing smile) “Yedewelkut eko enditazezlgn neber”. She: “Yegna ager sew eko 5 deqiqa blo 15 new yemiqoyew. Endayberdbh byeko new” 😀 She is nice. And the firfir is good.

You won’t believe what I had for dinner. I am still digesting it myself. Pieces of chicken leg and tilapia marinaded in 4 kinds of spices 2 of which are in turn mixtures of spices themselves; California Vegetable Medley added at the final stages of frying; a sprinkle of a 4 Mexican cheese blend; Romaine hearts+blueberry salad. Everything dumped on a plate of እንጀራ –yes! we’ve got እንጀራ in the house, ladies and gentlemen–with a side of ሚጥሚጣ. washed it down with, wait for it, water.
Ate with my left hand since I be nursing a right hand thumb with a “partially excised” nail.

One of my favorite quotes from Waking life:
“I know we haven’t met but I don’t want to be an ant, you know? I mean it’s like we go through life, with our antennas bouncing off one another, continuously on ant auto pilot with nothing really human required of us. Stop, go. Walk here, drive there. All action basically for survival, all communication simply to get this ant colony buzzing along in an efficient, polite manner. ‘Here is your change’. ‘Paper or plastic’? ‘Credit or debit’? ‘Want catch up with that’? I don’t want a straw. I want real human moment. I want to see you. I want you to see me. I don’t want to give that up. I don’t want to be an ant, you know?”

I’ve been sending happy new year messages to people, and getting back many too. I made an experiment on one of my happy new year responses. I replied: “Thank you friend, F* you too”. My theory was: we are all used to happy new year messages that once we see “happy” our mind completes the rest. I haven’t heard from my friend since. Do you think this proves my theory? Or maybe he is quiet because he doesn’t want to speak to me again? Being a scientist has never been easy.

now she has went so hungry that, she has even stopped trying to jump me in the mornings when i leave the house (i pat her on the head for about a minute and things are peachy)
i wish i could go to our landlord and ask forgiveness on her behalf: “she has promised to behave and never to carry out misguided biting sessions. and it is high time that our girl got rid of her fear.” But i think it is going to be hard to extract a promise out of Maino.

one thing i don’t miss at all about ethiopia is how badly animals get treated. i can understand a poor farmer not being able to feed his ox, but others mistreat animals for nothing. they take out their angers on animals. some take joy in mistreating them. and please don’t tell me people are dying of hunger. no mistreatment of animals is going to get us out of poverty. we’d have been rich if it did.

My take on it is people shouldn’t be giving money just so they feel better on the spot. If they want to help they can do something substantial. They can contribute their share to an organization they believe in, pay towards someone’s education, help someone to get their business off the ground, or anything else that helps in the long run. It doesn’t have to be big. eg. 1 birr every month, 12 birr per year, use the money to photocopy part of a book that someone desperately needs.

Obama is in the UK blabbering about the US-European alliance and leadership of the world. Why is it important that any country or alliance leads the world? Kingdoms, alliances, call it whatever they want – overly powerful entities – are one major cause of conflicts and an obstacle to democracy. What sort of leadership does he have in mind? Leadership through slavery which brought his ancestors from Africa to America? Because back then people really believed they were doing the right thing, that they were actually taking the black and brown people out of their miseries. Leadership through support for dictators that are friends of the white alliance and Israel? It seems the inhabitants of the Middle East are not happy with any of those choices that were made for them… to the point that they are literally burning themselves. Leadership through killing and dismantling millions of people in the name of bringing terrorists to justice? Why doesn’t he start with his own country’s unemployment rate, health problems and trillions of debt? The only leader of the world should be the UN. No, not the UN as we know it now – where some countries have entitled themselves with special rights, but the UN where everyone gets a fair say. Everybody taking part in leadership is the only way peace can be achieved. It is that simple all you power hungry idiots.

Only two hot albums (Aster and Helen) have been out this year.
Wait a minute, how long a time period does “contemporary” span?
sileshi demissie’s “hoya hoye” on the speakers. a great album to give to an ethiopian family whose kid is turning 1-5. and here comes bezawork with her tizita.

91 birr per month. if i die a natural death, i would be worth 20 thou; if by accident, 40 thou; major accidents like cross country bus and airplanes, 60 thou.

60 thousand for major accidents huh? my conversation with a geek friend of mine yesterday,
Friend: Have you ever played the lottery?
Me: No…is it fun?
Friend: Did you know that the chances of you winning are the same as the chances of you getting hit by a car and a lightening strike – all on the same day?
Me: Good point. I’m not playing.
I think you’ll be confused if you had an accident and you know you are just about to die. Would you consider yourself lucky or unlucky?

This is a nice read. It’s about name callings in Ghana,

I’ve called people donkey, dog and mouse.
Well, mouse doesn’t count as such. I use it in a friendly context.

seattle weather is like edinburgh’s, iowa is a big flat land with nice small towns, i have now gotten rid of my fear of holding little children, and i didn’t bother to take a picture of the white house.

fear of holding little children?…. really TIye…Nahome would have a blast with you, since he will be jumping all over you if you ever get here. I told them you were here but you cannot come to ohio ( donot ask me how we ended up talking about you but we did) and Emanuel said he wishes you would come and sit and play with them and he told me to have you talk to them next time you call because they want to try and convince you to come here.
yeah I have been to DC like three or four times.. never took a picture of the White house either… I donot know why….

never really had time for the white house. 🙂
now, don’t go around hugging every child you come across on the streets; someone could mistake you for a paedophile.
and these nahom and nathnael, what are they 18?

ayo i be falling in love on a daily basis – the benefits of not being involved (but was it my choice?). and to top it off, with impunity.
today I could not eat lunch for one reason or another and i was going to the internet room with bourbon cream biscuits in my pocket.
in front of me I see this teacher coming from class. and she was class. the biscuits decide to pop out of my pocket. your unsuspecting bro stoops to pick up his lunch. meantime honey be checking his trasero.
he swears!
or is it, he wishes?
